No. 01 — Earn
Side hustles
A side hustle is only a wealth tool if the money reaches your portfolio. $500 a month, invested at 7%, is roughly $610,000 in 30 years. Spent, it's a nicer phone. Same hustle, different million.
Three tiers, honestly labeled
Tier 1: Sell hours (first dollar this week)
Delivery and rideshare driving, tutoring, pet sitting, bookkeeping for small businesses, weekend trades work. Effective rates run $15–$50/hour, income stops when you stop, but there's zero ramp-up. Best used for a defined mission — killing a credit card via get out of debt or seeding the first $100k — not as a permanent second shift.
Tier 2: Sell your professional skill (first dollar this month)
The highest-percentage play for most professionals: freelance the thing your employer already pays you for. Freelance rates typically run 2–3× your salaried hourly equivalent because clients pay no benefits or overhead. Design, writing, development, accounting, marketing — five billable hours a week at $75–$150/hour outearns twenty hours of Tier 1.
Tier 3: Build an asset (first dollar in months, ceiling uncapped)
Digital products, niche content sites, productized services, small e-commerce — the online business route. Most attempts earn nothing for months; the successful ones eventually earn while you sleep and can be sold. Treat Tier 3 as a calculated bet funded by Tier 1 or 2 income, not as a plan to skip them.
The filter: three questions before you start
What's the real hourly rate after expenses, mileage, and platform fees? Does it scale or stack? An hour of driving is worth the same forever; an hour building a skill or asset appreciates. Will it survive your life? The best side hustle is the one still running in month eight — consistency beats intensity here exactly as it does in investing.
The rule that makes it count
Open a separate account. Every hustle dollar lands there and auto-transfers to investments — it never touches checking, so it never becomes lifestyle. Give the stream a job title: "this pays for the Roth IRA." Watch what that does to your date in the millionaire calculator, then see increase your income for the day-job levers that often pay even better per hour.
